School Direct - Teacher Training

Manor Field Infant School are are one of the schools supporting the School Direct initiative.

What is School Direct?

School Direct is a dynamic and exciting school-led teacher training programme designed and delivered by an alliance of schools in partnership with a university. Aspire’s School Direct course lasts one year and the intention is to  train in at least two local schools as well as receiving training from the University of Winchester. In light of the current Covid 19 situation, the training in a second school may be under review as part of Department for Education’s health and safety risk assessment and prevention measures.

Why choose School Direct?

Our School Direct Programme prepares trainees to teach primary aged children (ages 5-11) and the full breadth of the National Curriculum. Aspire also aims to develop and nurture resilient, reflective, creative and responsive classroom teachers.

This course offers a brilliant option if you want to train and learn ‘on the job’ in a primary school, seeing teaching and learning in action every day. Trainees spend four days each week in their host school, learning alongside an experienced class teacher who acts as their mentor for the year. The remaining day is dedicated to high-quality professional training. Approximately twenty-three of these training days are delivered at an Aspire partner school and twelve days are delivered by the University of Winchester, an accredited outstanding Initial Teacher Training provider.

You shouldn’t worry about being thrown in at the deep end at your host school. You’ll be part of a team from the very start, receiving intensive support from experienced teachers and mentors. All our mentors are experienced class teachers who have received training in order to support and mentor you throughout the whole year.

As our programme is in partnership with an outstanding university, you will also receive continuous support from an Academic Liaison Tutor from the University of Winchester as well as the full range of student services Winchester provide.

Comments from previous trainees about the advantages of our School Direct programme:

“Learning on the job and seeing teachers in action…having the opportunities to try and try again. Taking risks in our teaching and having supportive class mentors who feedback straight away with new strategies and assurance.”

“We are so well prepared; nothing we haven’t seen, almost no stresses/pressures we haven’t seen…no rose-tinted glasses.”

“I can implement my training immediately.”
